Country Life: Invisible Fence

Wood pile

Saturday hubby was out chopping wood when all of the sudden I heard a strange beeping noise. At first I thought it was the video game my boys were playing. After a couple of minutes the noise didn’t subside so I decided to investigate.

The beeping was coming from the Pet Safe system in our laundry room. Since our Border Collie is an escape artist, I knew we had a problem if the fence was not working. I yelled out to hubby and told him the Pet Safe system was beeping.

He says “Uh, oh! I think I might have cut the underground line as I was chopping wood.”

Axe

The invisible fence encompasses a large area; probably close to two acres. When hubby was chopping wood he never even considered that he might be chopping right over top of the underground fencing.

By this point hubby had chopped about a 1/4 cord of wood. With the wood spread out all over the place, the hunt was on for the exact spot the underground wiring was severed. Sounds like fun doesn’t it?! It was sort of like trying to find a needle in a haystack.

Cut Wire

When we finally found the chopped area, thankfully hubby was able to splice the wires back together.

Lesson learned! If you are ever going to chop or dig, make sure you know where the underground wiring is!

All ended well. What a great weekend to be cutting wood also, for the long winter!

    • Hi Kim,
Yes it was a wonderful weekend for chopping wood! We live in the middle of a forest and unfortunately whoever built our house didn’t put in a wood burning fireplace. We sell the wood for extra money though!
