Canning Strawberry Jam

Strawberries

For the last five years, the beginning of June means strawberry jam canning time for me. My boys love PB&J and eat it almost daily. After looking at the ingredients in store bought jam and jelly, I prefer my children have homemade! Most of the store bought jam and jelly has high fructose corn syrup on it.

Usually we head off to a local strawberry patch and pick strawberries as a family. This year, time was not on our side! In fact I didn’t even know if I would get to make strawberry jam this year as we have been so busy. On Friday I made a stop at Sam’s Club and they had 2 pound package of strawberries for $2.98! That comes out to $1.49 a pound! The pick your own prices this year were over $2 a pound. So I decided that in order to get my strawberry jam making in this year, I would “cheat” and buy the berries pre-picked from Sam’s Club. Not only was it a time saver, it was a lot cheaper.

My boys helped me make four batches of strawberry jam yesterday. They washed, hulled and chopped the berries as I made the jam. I couldn’t ask for better helpers!

Making jam is relatively easy. I have some tips for making strawberry jam in a previous post that might be helpful.
