One, two, three, four, five….how many cameras are in your household? Every cell phone is equipped with a camera now too—-think through how many discarded old cell phones are in your household. Children love cameras as much as we do (especially if they are visual learners).

Cameras are great tools for documenting our lives. They can serve as great tools for children to document their lives too. Their perspective can be caught through the lens of a camera. Recently, a mom from my daughter’s class was sharing how she ‘found’ little videos of her son on his Ipad when he was much younger. She noted that they were little treasures since so much time has passed from the date of recording.

Pictures our children take can help us understand their viewpoints and/or what they are interested in while we are busy capturing what we love (them)! Talking about pictures they capture from an early age can trigger great conversations that need to be had within our homes and in the safety of our families. We can talk about what’s appropriate and/or inappropriate. Those conversations are just beginning to unravel for us in our household (Litsa’s) with a seven year old daughter. Children can learn to understand that pictures give people information about us if we share them, etc. The dialogue that pictures capture will evoke endless thought processes.

My daughter and I like to scroll through our pictures together and discuss each moment. Sometimes thoughts and ideas that I didn’t think through come out because of that extra moment we took to review the photographs and discuss them. The pictures and conversations combined give me a deeper perspective about our lives and hopefully will guide her into capturing images that inspire her to live life fully.

Take a few minutes to charge an extra camera and/or old phone. Give it to your child and see what they capture with their own camera. Delete images that aren’t clear and with each conversation about camera creations document all the ways your child is turning into a photographer!
