Back in April we purchased six pullet chicks. We had been keeping them in our greenhouse which we turned into a chick nursery. When the chicks get big enough and the night time temperatures stabilize, we place the juvenile pullets in our chicken tractor. The big move to the chicken tractor was pushed up by an unexpected broody hen!
Last week we discovered that Brown Town was laying on eleven eggs! With our busy evenings we had neglected to collect eggs for three days. This prompted Brown Town to brood. We are thrilled of the possibility of hatching chicks again as it is such a great experience. However, the chicks will hatch a few days before we leave for vacation. Thus, we decided to move everyone around so Brown Town will have her own private place to raise her babies.
So, the juvenile pullets were upgraded to the chicken tractor and Brown Town was moved to the nursery. We had to get Brown Town out of the main chicken coup as the other hens were attacking her. They broke two of her eggs so she is down to nine eggs. It took a few hours for Brown Town to adjust to her new surroundings – she wasn’t a happy momma to be moved to a new nesting box! She finally settled in and everyone seems content at the moment.
With three ages of chickens in three different pins, it brings a little extra work. Thankfully Capt. M has been very helpful in filling up the water and feed for Brown Town and the juvenile pullets! Gotta love my little farmer boy!
