Back to School

The other day I took a poll on the How to Have it All faebook page about the starting date of school. It looks like the majority of schools start in early to mid August. That means that we all need to get into the back to school shopping mode!

Some states offer Back to School Tax Free Days. That means that the sales tax is waived on select purchases during the set days. There is a list of participating states and the corresponding dates over at the Tax Admin website.

Each state has their own set of “rules”.  The sales tax break is only up to a certain amount of the purchase price and only on certain products.  For example, Virginia only offers the tax break on a school supplies purchase up to $20. Make sure you read over the guidelines for your state.

Many stores will offer sales and deep discounts during the tax free weekends. Make sure you stick to your list though. Don’t let low prices entice you to buy more unless you really need it!

Remember that stores may be more crowded on the tax free weekends. It might be wiser to shop the sales early to avoid the crowds. I don’t typically shop tax free weekend. What I do is make a list now and when I see a good price on school supplies, I buy. For example, Kroger had Crayola Crayon(24 ct.) on sale for $0.29 last week. It is hard to beat that price so I picked up four boxes (the requirement for Capt. M’s school supply list).
