Back-to-School Physicals

If you and/or your child are due for back-to-school, work, or sports physicals with your regular physician make a list of HEAD to TOE concerns and/or questions—check points to discuss with your doctor! I (Litsa) did just that with my daughter last week.

Sophia’s doctor is only in the clinic in town two days a month. Thus, we don’t have the luxury of running in to see her like we did when our daughter was younger (and in need of her physician more often)! During our six year old physical for back-to-school, I didn’t have a specific check list written out but I did refer to health notes in Evernote on my iphone. Aside from having this ONE day to visit with our pediatrician, we didn’t have a co-pay for the six year old physical. I wanted to maximize our time in the office so I didn’t have to come back with questions later.

A few points we reviewed:

  • Up-to-date shots, physical well being
  • An eye that didn’t have to have surgery in late winter
  • The antibacterial cream that saved us from surgery
  • Crohn’s disease since a recent diagnosis was made in our family
  • Bloodwork
  • Urine sample
  • Swimmer’s Ear (a vacation concern while traveling overseas)
  • Laser option to a blood vein
  • Tail bone x-rays
  • Discussion of new school (anxiety, comfort levels, learning styles, etc.)

From my list above, you can see that our scheduled ‘physical’ was a revisit of health issues from head-to-toe beyond the ‘normal six year old physical’. The visit with our pediatrician also entailed discussion of our daughter’s social well-being.

Think through your own child(ren)’s upcoming physicals and/or your own physical this season. Use that time to review health concerns that are relevant to you. Knowledge is power when it comes to our health—-peace of mind for mothers/fathers when it comes to our child(ren)’s health!
