April: National Poetry Month

poetry month

National Poetry Month is a month-long, national celebration of poetry established by the Academy of American Poets. The concept is to widen the attention of individuals and the media—to the art of poetry, to living poets, to our complex poetic heritage, and to poetry books and journals of wide aesthetic range and concern. We hope to increase the visibility and availability of poetry in popular culture while acknowledging and celebrating poetry’s ability to sustain itself in the many places where it is practiced and appreciated.”

Shower your child(ren) with free verse this month—–poems with made up words, classic Mother Goose Rhymes and more! Here are just two books of rhymes that my daughter (almost five now) and I (Litsa) enjoy reading aloud!

Mother Goose

Sample Rhyme from The New Adventures of Mother Goose created by Bruce Lansky: “Yankee Doodle went to town riding on a rooster. His saddle wasn’t high enough so now he’s got a booster!”

We also love to read from Poetry By Heart: A Child’s Book of Poems to Remember that includes poems about Four Seasons—-Spring is showery, flowery, bowery or Little Wind—blow on the hill-top…blow down the plain…blow off the rain!

Don’t miss the opportunity this weekend to visit your local library in celebration of National Poetry Month! Check out books with rhymes, poems, and more for everyone in your household! READ aloud. Take in the illustrations and/or create your own images after hearing rhymes and word combinations that will keep your head searching for more!
