Sweet & citrusy this dessert is sure to please the pallet and assuage that sweet tooth & if an apple a day keeps the doctor away then this delicious dish has got you covered for at least a week!
This is a great recipe for any time of year! Make sure to use apples that are good for baking.
This dessert is the perfect combination of sweet, tart and crunchy! Serve with vanilla ice cream or whip cream!
- ½ cup old fashioned rolled oats
- ½ cup light brown sugar
- ⅓ cup whole wheat flour
- ½ tsp salt
- ½ tsp of cinnamon + ¼ tsp, divided
- ¼ tsp nutmeg
- Pinch of cloves
- 4 tbsp unsalted butter, cubed
- 2 ½ lbs of gala apples (this is approximately 6-7 good sized apples)
- ½ cup dried cranberries
- 1 tbsp sugar
- Zest from one small orange
- Preheat oven to 375 degrees F.
- Grease a 7X11 baking dish with cooking spray or grease dish with butter.
- In a small bowl whisk together oats, brown sugar, flour, salt, ½ tsp cinnamon, nutmeg and cloves.
- Add butter cubes and using two knives or a pastry cutter blend the butter into the oat mixture until crumbly and the butter cubes are small pea sized lumps.
- Peel, core and dice your apples into 1 inch chunks and place in a large bowl. Add cranberries and then sprinkle with orange zest, cinnamon and sugar; toss to coat the apple chunks.
- Transfer the apple chunks to the baking dish and top with the crumbled oat mixture.
- Bake for 45-60 minutes or until apples are tender and the crumble topping takes on a rich golden color. If the apples aren’t tender but the dish is browning too fast then cover loosely with aluminum foil and continue baking.
- Remove from oven and cool for at least 30 minutes.
- Serve & enjoy with ice cream, whip cream or all on its own!!!
