My hubby is an artist although he rarely uses his talent. Since we are focusing on Heartfelt Holiday gifts this year I encouraged him to pick up the paint brush. I picked up some white plates a the Dollar Store and some acrylic paint from Michaels.
To paint on the plates you need to clean them first with vinegar. To make it easy, there are templates you can use so anyone can really do this! The acrylic paint drys quickly so there is not a lot of working time. Also, it peels off the plate easily when not set. It took hubby a few tries to get it right.
Once the paint is on the plate and your are happy with your creation, let the paint dry for 48 hours. Then place the plate in a cold oven. Turn on the oven to 350 degrees and bake for 30 minutes. After the plate cooled we applied some clear acrylic sealer. Spray two to three coats of the sealer on the plate.
I then glued the dishes to a candlestick holder to make a plate stand! This particular plate stand was a gift to hubby’s sister. Her kitchen is red and blue and it looked to cute sitting on the red table!
The plates are more decorative than for serving I would say. We are still experimenting with different paint and testing how well it holds up.
Do you have a homemade gift idea? I would love to read about your ideas!
