We had a great surprise at work this week when someone brought us buckets and buckets of fresh figs. I had never eaten a fresh fig before and I was very excited to try something new. Plus I knew instantly that I would try my hand at fig preserves.
Almost the whole fig is edible. Just remove the stem and bite into the soft skin. There are very small seeds inside that are also edible- it’s what gives the fig (and fig newtons!) the little crunch. It’s hard to explain the taste of a fig since it is such a unique fruit. It is sweet but not overly sweet. There are a lot of different textures due to the skin, soft flesh and seeds.
I ended up making two batches of fig preserves- one batch with orange, lemon and vanilla and one batch with lemon and vanilla. This will be a very special treat for a few people on my Christmas list!
I will tell you, my boys did not care or fresh figs. I don’t think it was the taste but the texture.
Have you ever had a fresh fig?
