This season while you are out grocery shopping, you’ve probably noticed the growing display of nuts. Take a few minutes to get a feel of what nuts are in your local grocery store (hopefully, you’ll only meet those that are edible)!
Nuts tend to be added to many favorite holiday cookies and recipes but raw nuts are perfect too. They always keep me company—-when I’m driving, I tend to remember that I need a little fuel. Nuts are nearby to keep me going. I like to toss a variety in a Ziploc bag so that I can have them on hand for munch time.
My bagged mix of nuts includes:
Almonds: These teardrop shaped nuts are first cousins with peaches. They have a slightly sweet taste and contain the most protein & fiber.
Cashews: These are shell-less nuts. These gems are sweet and buttery bites called drupes or fruit.
Hazelnuts: An exceedingly fragrant nut that is rich in texture. They may even be fruity in taste.
Macadamia: Plum macadamia nuts contain more fat than any other tree nut but because of that their dense, rich flesh taste buttery.
Peanuts: Known as legumes but are commonly grouped with the nut family…these little peas have a pleasantly earthy taste.
So which nuts would suit you? Do you have a favorite or do you like to enjoy a mixture of them? Watch their prices during baking season and revisit these nuts after the holidays. You just might be able to add a few more to your shopping cart if your family is tree nut allergy free!
Go nuts!
