I’m (Litsa) sitting here enjoying a cup of coffee this morning and reflecting on the seasonal surplus, magazines and catalogs. These two are filling my magazine bin, my counter top, my window seat, the front seat of my truck, my gift bags, and more!
All that glitters isn’t golden!?!
Oh! How I love these magazines and catalogs that fill my mailbox. I love to read them and browse the many, many delightful pictures of gifts to buy—or mostly dream about….or try to guess which ones might end up at local thrift stores after being purchased!?! And the words……gratitude.joy.tis the season.give thanks.come who are weary.red……I love paper products that fill my senses.
But they are filling our landfills too this season!
Thus, I want to encourage us (myself too) all to find a gift box or two that you can use to help sort these seasonal items this month. For the recycle bin, toss in magazines and catalogs that you are finished with (donate magazines to Goodwill for others if they are in tip top shape). Don’t forget about magazine projects. Upcycle some of the fine paper crafted pages for gift tags. And as you are thumbing through your newspapers too, don’t forget the store surplus—the fliers–recycle them too!
Our local community doesn’t have a recycle program in place for products to be picked up at the curb but after one week of realizing how much I’ve tossed into the garbage, I want to slow down this season and use just a few minutes a day to corral our seasonal surplus—and direct the papers where they’ll fill needs:
- Something for someone else to read: Donate or Share
- Gift Tags to Make
- Recycle Trailer (Bin to dump paper goods in for neighboring community)
- Unsubscribe
