Watermelon carving was a new experience for hubby and I last month! I had seen several ideas of watermelon baskets on pinterest over the last year. They make such a statement to the party table. Overall watermelon carving is fairly easy. It does take time. It took us about two hours to complete the carving and fill the watermelon bow with fruit. We had so many compliments on the watermelon bowl that it was well worth the effort!
The first step is to pick out a watermelon that would be good for carving! Look for an oblong watermelon over a round watermelon. It should have one side that is somewhat flat so it’s stable. Plus keep in mind the tips for picking out a watermelon that I posted about earlier.
Once you have the perfect melon, wash it and dry it. Take a sharpie and draw out your pattern. We made a simple pattern with a wide handle. We decided to mark out just straight lines and then add the decorative finish after the fruit was extracted from the bowl.
Cut out the watermelon basket handle using a sharp knife.
Then use a melon baller to scoop the watermelon fruit out of the bowl. If you don’t need the watermelon in neat little balls, you could also scoop the fruit out with a spoon. Once you get to the bottom of the watermelon, use a pumpkin scooper or big spoon to clean the inside of the bowl well.
Hubby then added a lot more detail to the watermelon bowl. He made decorative edges and added a little diamond flair to the handle. I used cookie cutters to make star shapes out of the watermelon fruit that was on the top we cut off. I then used toothpicks to secure the stars to the handle! A vegetable peeler works great to make the edges smooth and uniform.
I also used small star shaped cookie cutters to cut some melon stars for the top of the fruit bowl.
This is just one idea you can do with a watermelon to make a bowl. We want to try different carvings the next time we have a party.
