Day 5

After five months of juicing, I (Litsa) have thought and thought about composting!?! A ‘DIY Composting Basics’ information guide was nestled within my Eating Well magazine. So I read through it:

When you’re collecting for your own backyard composter, don’t include greasy food, meat, fish, bones, diary, and large seeds (cherry seeds, avocado pits, peach pits). That’s because the temperature of the decaying mix doesn’t get hot enough to break these down properly (some commercial programs do). Bucket-friendly items include fruits, veggies, eggshells, coffee grounds, and tea bags (sans staples).

Now, that sounded simple enough if only I can pick a place in our backyard to create our home compost! I think there might be a little more to it than these little basic tips listed here! Recently, we were creating a new flower bed that needed top soil, so I opted to add my juicing pulps and coffee filters to the mix of old soil. We were going to top it with new dirt/soil. However, life simply got busy! We never added that top soil mixture. Thus, I had to act quickly before the animals and/or bugs attacked our new flower bed! One bag of soil did the trick to cover our ‘DIY’ perfect pulp mess!?! I do believe that time must be a factor when composting. A family needs to determine who’s job it will be to carry food items out to the compost. Who will add leaves and other items to it? Will there be other jobs that are required?

If you, like me want to begin composting. Research first. Then begin after all of your notes on composting are organized. You don’t want a mess in place of what could be a success. Renae has made a homemade composting bin out of trash can!
