Or maybe the question is, “What keeps you from crafting!?!” In the midst of March, you’ll want to find all the sparks that ignite creative venues for you and your family! It’s National Craft Month! Scissors, tape, glue, glitter, cardboard, paper—get it all out and sit around the kitchen table making a craft and/or making a mess. Nonetheless, you’ll make memories for a lifetime. The beauty of crafting is that the memories are what remain!

“Mommy, I have an idea!?!”

“Mommy, that butterfly is getting nectar from the flower!”

I (Litsa) love nature, crafts, language, butterflies…..but I don’t go around talking about nectar to my 5.5 year old. Thus, hearing her talk about nectar and butterflies as we are creating makes my heart swell as I notice not only her engagement with the craft but the language she brings to the table with her growing knowledge of the world around her.

Crafts also evoke opportunities to feel textures (cotton balls being pulled apart or cotton balls being dipped in paint) and experiment with new tools (scissors, glue gun, etc.). Additionally, crafts help children and adults “think outside the box”—what can we use as stems? Petals? Grass?

March 2014 014The Internet’s vast array of resources—blogs, Facebook, Pinterest, and more—can keep you crafting for days this month! But there’s no right or wrong way to begin a project. I love using materials that we have on hand to being and finish a project that we are creating. This one today began with paper and paints that my daughter used on a Saturday evening before dinner. When it dried, I cut out her paper in shapes of flowers. Then, I looked for green straws in the kitchen cabinet. I pulled out some paint and a long piece of cardboard that I had just tossed in the garbage. I laid out those items and then the questions began Sunday morning. As we were making lunch, we began painting hands green to create the spring grass that we are anticipating. The rest came together after lunch.

March 2014 040Now were are just waiting for Spring to POP out——and the next crafty creation too!

What are you crafting this month?
