Depending on your age, when one says SPINACH—you may say Popeye!?! Or green!?! Or…healthy!?! There are many benefits of eating spinach when you begin to read all about this leafy, green powerhouse. Here’s a “Spinach Strong” list to keep you eating it for life:
- A nutrient dense food—low in calories. Eat it abundantly.
- A leafy green that is an excellent source of vitamin K, vitamin A, magnesium, folate, manganese, iron, calcium, vitamin C, vitamin B2, potassium, and vitamin B6. It’s a very good source of protein, phosphorus, vitamin E, zinc, dietary fiber, and copper. Plus, it’s a good source of selenium, niacin, and omega-3 fatty acids.

- A versatile food that can be eaten raw in salads, juiced to drink, added to smoothies, added to pastas, and more…
- Spinach is loaded with flavonoids which act as antioxidants, protecting the body from free radicals. Researchers have discovered at least 13 different flavonoid compounds that act as anti-cancer substances. In other words, protects from many illnesses.
- It is a heart healthy food! The antioxidants in it work to keep cholesterol from oxidizing. In addition, folate is good for a healthy cardiovascular system, as well as magnesium, a mineral that helps to lower high blood pressure.
- Gastrointestinal health can be guarded by eating more of this food. The beta-carotene and vitamin C work to protect the cells of the body’s colon from the harmful effects of free radicals.
- It is an excellent source of iron.
As you can see from this list alone, spinach is a powerhouse of green goodness. It will keep you STRONG from the inside out! Eat it weekly to introduce it to your body. And then strive to include spinach daily into your diet. Add a few leaves to a sandwich or a salad of other greens, saute it or make a salad with it alone with fruits and nuts! I have been eating the most amazing spinach salad for lunch everyday lately.
Spinach, strawberries, purple onion, roasted sunflower seeds, and croutons.
I top it with Ken’s Lite Raspberry Walnut Vinaigrette Dressing. Super tasty!
