Medication Labels

When sickness sets in, many times our first thought is to get relief from medication. We are lucky to live in a time when we can quickly get relief from fever, headaches and pain with medications like acetaminophen and ibuprofen. However, you need to use caution when taking medications!

Did you know that acetaminophen is an active ingredient in more than 600 over the counter and prescription medications? If you don’t read the labels, it could be easy to overdose on acetaminophen which could damage the liver.

For example, the prescription medication Vicodin contains acetaminophen and so does the over the counter drug NyQuil. That means you probably shouldn’t take both of them at the same time. To be safe, only take one medication that contains acetaminophen at at time. If you are on prescription medications, make sure to consult the pharmacists regarding safe over the counter pain relief medications.

When looking at your prescription medication labels look for the abbreviation APAP- that would mean the medication contains acetaminophen.

As a reminder, if you are on medications, make sure to always carry a medication list with you in case of a medical emergency!
