Giving Tuesday

The shopping has begun, the decorations are being hung and the parties are being planned. It’s easy to get caught up in the hustle and bustle of the holiday season. Along with all of the excitement, there usually is a little stress too. And before you know it, the month is gone! Take a moment and breath.Remember what the holiday season is about and take some time to give back.

December 3rd, 2013 has been deemed #GivingTuesday. It’s a day to recognize giving; a call to action day. Here is a little more info on #GivingTuesday

  • #GivingTuesday was a new national day of giving added to the calendar on November 27, 2012, the Tuesday following Thanksgiving, Black Friday and Cyber Monday.
  • Families and individuals were encouraged to be generous in whatever ways mattered to them, whether that meant volunteering at a local charity or donating to a favorite cause.
  • Over 2,500 charities, volunteer organizations, corporations and foundations came together in all 50 U.S. states with one common purpose ‐‐ to help others and incentivize ways to give more, give smarter, and celebrate the great American spirit of contribution.

I want my boys to have the giving spirit! Even though we don’t have a lot of money to give, I am all about being resourceful in our giving efforts. As I mentioned a couple of weeks ago, I use coupons to get food items for free. My boys then take the food to their school for the food pantry donations. Coming up next week, the Toy Lift will be collecting donations. We have some brand new toys that my boys have never played with. We will gather those items and donate them! Hopefully my boys will see that giving comes from the heart.

You don’t have to donate money- donate your time or be resourceful with coupons to get items for free to donate. Give a hug, give a smile, give a compliment. Just give!

How do you encourage the giving spirit in your children? Do you do something special with them to encourage giving?
