Have you noticed the squirrels are frantic this year? Well at least they are here in Central Virginia. I mentioned a couple of weeks ago that the squirrels were scavenging our garden for food. The lack of acorns this year is due to cicada damage to the trees, and the squirrels are out in force looking for food.
Now that are garden is pretty much non-existent, the squirrels have moved on to the chicken coop. Hubby was looking out the window when he witnessed a squirrel beating on the top of Brown Town and baby chicks cage. By the time I looked out, the squirrel had figured out a way to get into the portable coop.
Let me tell you, mama hen was not happy!
That squirrel ran around the portable coop like crazy as Brown Town squawked and puffed her feathers. I don’t think the squirrel would have bothered the chick but mama hen was not taking chances. I finally lifted the door and the squirrel scurried out.
Since then, we have seen squirrels in the large chicken coop. They are not bothering the chickens, however, they are eating all of the chicken feed! Very annoying!
It seems there is no stopping these squirrels as tree squirrels don’t hibernate. On another note, my mom in California reported that they have the biggest acorns this year. Maybe I need a shipment of acorns from California!
