Popcorn

October is a fun time for kids. It brings cooler weather and colorful autumn leaves. Children are back on their school routine and they’re making new friends that you’d probably like to meet. October is also National Popcorn Popping Month. It’s a great excuse to have a party, celebrate fall and have some fun with popcorn. It’s something that makes the house smell good, and older children can participate in making microwave popcorn. This makes for a fun and festive party to welcome fall and celebrate National Popcorn Month. It doesn’t have to be expensive, it just has to be fun.

Party Decorations

Use inexpensive party decorations to set the mood. Crepe paper streamers are an easy way to make the room feel festive. It’s not a party without balloons. Choose fall colors, like orange, yellow, red, brown and dark gold latex balloons. Coordinate them with streamers, plates, utensils and cups for the full effect. Pick these up at the discount store. The party balloons can either be filled with air at home or inflated with helium at the store. Static window clings with leaves and fall themes can cover mirrors and windows.

Fun With Popcorn

Depending on the age of your party guests, popcorn crafts or games could be in order. Pop some popcorn or microwave kettle corn. Fill up decorative leaf dishes for snacking, and larger bowls for other activities with popcorn.
Stringing popcorn on thread to make necklaces and garlands is one option for kids old enough to use a needle and thread or fishing line.
A popcorn race is another idea. Divide the kids into equal-numbered teams. Each team gets a plastic spoon. Place three pieces of popcorn on the spoon and have a relay race to see which team can walk across the room, around a chair and back again without losing the light and airy popcorn from the spoon.
Fill up a clear jar or plastic jug with popcorn and have the guests guess how many pieces are in it. The winner gets a prize. The kids get the popcorn.

Refreshments

One way to keep expenses low is to serve punch and cookies or cake. Bake your own cookies and use fall colors for sprinkles and decorations. Depending on where you live, it might also be a good opportunity for one last cookout. October is a time to celebrate fall, friends and fun.
