Every Autumn and Spring, there are several consignment sales in my area. They only last for a week or so, but it’s a good time to stockup on clothing. It’s also a great time to make a little extra cash! Here are some tips for getting items ready for a consignment sale.
- Most consignment sales are for in season items. I store my off season items in a plastic tote until the appropriate season sale comes along.
- Sell only your best items. I can’t tell you how many times I have seen clothing with holes or stains hanging up in a consignment sale. Make sure the items you are saving to consign are in good condition.
- Coming up with a price can be difficult. Price items to sell! Yes, I know you might be emotionally attached to the item and want top dollar. However, it is better to make a little money than none at all. Consider the original price and then price your item about a third of that price if it is in really good condition.
- Have large safety pins and wire hangers on hand. The Dollar Tree sells a 100 pack of safety pins. Ask friends and family for hangers. If all else fails, go to the dry cleaner for hangers! I start saving hangers way in advance.
- Sort the items by size and gender. Most consignments will want everything divided up and it is easier to do it ahead of time.
- Get the family involved! I had hubby cutting tags and pinning them on the appropriate items.
Since we live in the country, yard sales would be difficult. Consignment sales are a good way to earn a little extra for our used items. It does require organization and a little work though!
Do you consign your children’s clothing? How about toys?
