If you live in an area that was invaded by the Cicada Brood II, you have probably noticed that some tree branches are starting to turn brown. We have a ton of oak trees on our property. We started noticing the end branches of the oak trees turning brown a couple of weeks ago. At first we didn’t know what was going on. Were the trees dying?
It turns out that the cicadas burrow into the tree limbs to deposit their eggs. The branch then dies and falls to the ground. The eggs then deposit into the soil to await for 17 years until they emerge again.
Our yard and driveway is littered with dead tree branches. The trees should survive just fine though. Apparently the larger trees will not sustain long term damage from the cicadas. However, I think our small pear tree might not make it. We shall see next spring!
Are you seeing damaged trees and shrubs from cicadas?
