Easy Craft: Beaded Candy Canes

Are you enjoying time in the kitchen baking with friends this season? Or maybe just crafting over a cup of coffee and conversation!?! You’ll want to gather a few materials and the children to create these bendable, unique candy canes! The supply list is simple. Take a look and practice a few math skills along the way too: counting beads, measuring your pipe cleaners, making patterns, etc.

Materials
Red & White Pipecleaners
Beads: red, green, white (or other)
bowl–for beads as crafters work with them
Scissors to cut pipe cleaners
wire pliers (optional)

Place beads in small glass and/or plastic bowls. One bowl per child to minimize the fuss on who has more, etc. Give each child a pipe cleaner to string his/her beads onto in a pattern of their own. You may choose to precut the pipe cleaners in half or a little bit bigger than half—–determine ahead of time what size candy cane you want to create! If you are creating large candy canes for a larger tree and/or gift accents, you may want the entire pipe cleaner. Bend the pipe cleaner a few times in the end with wire pliers and/or your fingers so that the beads do not slip off. Once beads have been placed on the entire candy cane, you’ll want to bend in the wire at the other end as well. Then, just bend the pipe cleaner over to create the candy cane! Last, you’ll want to give your child(ren) the opportunity to place his/her candy canes where he/she would like———and save a few for yourself to use on gifts or such!

Keepsake memories and ornaments that children make are the best! As soon as my (Litsa) daughter, Sophia, came home from our friends’ home, she asked me where her candy canes were. I had placed them in a ziploc bag! She took the bag and ran to her room to place them on her own personal Christmas tree (this one here is Mr. B’s, Renae’s son).

What designs will your children create with beads for their own personal candy canes?
