We recently had Capt. M’s first ever “friends” birthday party. You might recall the chicken incident that happened just before the party that I told you about on Sunday. Anyways, I hit the Dollar Tree for decorations and game ideas. I spent around $15 for decorations, balloons, paper products and game supplies. With a little time, hubby and I came up with some great games for the kids to play.
Balloon Stomp
The first game we played was balloon stomp! Hubby used to play this game at his birthday parties when he was growing up. Just mark a big area off in your yard for the kids to stay in. We used baseball bases to make a square that the kids need to stay in to participate. Take a small piece of string or ribbon and tie a balloon to the child’s ankle. The goal of the game is to keep your balloon from getting popped! This was a great game to tire the kids out a bit- lot’s of running involved!
Sponge Balls
I made sponge balls out of colorful sponges from the Dollar Tree. We filled the bucket (also a Dollar Tree purchase) with water and the kids threw sponge balls at each other! These are much softer than water balloons plus they can be reused. Another idea would be to do a bucket toss with the water logged sponges. My friend Dian has a tutorial on how to make the sponge balls.
Water Balloon Toss
We did have water balloons but quickly found out they can hurt! Instead of having a water balloon fight, we did a water balloon toss. Hubby and I prefilled the water balloons before the party which was a huge time saver. I placed the water balloons in flower pots I had for easy carrying since I didn’t have extra buckets. For the toss, have the kids stand about two feet apart. Have the children toss the balloon back and forth taking one step back after each catch. The goal is to be the team that can toss the water balloon the furthest without breaking it!
Silly Balloon Face
Originally I bought the party hats to make ice cream cone balloon decorations. However, there is a helium shortage! Did you know that? Yes, helium is at a premium and it was going to cost me $1.20 a balloon to have high floating ice cream cone balloons. I decided to change my plan and put the party hat on top of a regular air blown balloon. They looked like people! For a low key game, we had the children decorate the balloon of their choice with a silly face!
A Sharpie does the trick and they were adorable! This was the prefect ending to all of the high energy games we had previously.
