Try Something New: Star Fruit

As we checked out at Kroger over the weekend the cashier asked, “what does that taste like?”. She was pointing to the star fruit we placed on the belt. I told her, I have no clue since it’s our Try Something New this week! The boys and I really enjoy trying something unexpected.

Star Fruit is technically called carambola and it grows on trees found mostly in South East Asia. The whole fruit is edible- skin and all. There are tiny seeds inside that we picked out. A ripe star fruit is slightly yellow with the brown stripe on the ridges.

When a star fruit is sliced, it looks like a star! These would great on top of a fruit salad! The inside of the star fruit has a texture similar to a grape. It tastes like citrus, pear and apple all mixed together. It is slightly sweet but not overpowering. It is really hard to describe the flavor since it is unlike any other fruit I have tried. Capt. M loved it! He ate the majority of the star fruit. Mr. B said it was okay. Hubby and I enjoyed the star fruit too, both taking shots on how to describe the flavor.

Have you tried anything new this week?
