Garden Update: Picking Squash, Cucumbers, Peas & Blackberries

I just returned home from a long weekend away to find a garden full of goodies! Hubby and the boys had picked three cucumbers over the weekend and I picked another three tonight. It looks like we will be eating plenty of cucumber salads this week!

I also picked our first zucchini squash. It is a little larger than I would have liked since smaller zucchini are more tender. When I can, I harvest vegetables when they are smaller since they have better flavor and have less seeds. There was also a yellow squash ready to pick so we will have grilled vegetables this week.

Our sweet peas are still producing! They are slowing down a bit with the warmer weather but we still have plenty to eat.

The Japanese beetles are attacking my blackberry  bush and peach tree. They are unmerciful. It is frustrating beyond belief to be so close to harvesting those peaches only to have them lost to beetles. I did pick a handful of berries that the beetles didn’t destroy. We have tried to stay as organic as possible but now understand that won’t be possible in our region if we want fruit to harvest! I talked with a women this week who has a peach orchard down the road and she said it is impossible to have organic peaches here. Bummer!

How is your garden growing? I would love to read an update!
