It’s time for my weekly garden update! On the weekends I spend a lot of time in the garden- pulling weeds, looking for bugs, harvesting and just admiring. When I head out to the garden I take certain supplies along. Here is a list of what I have on hand when I head to our vegetable garden:
- Waterproof garden shoes.
- Gloves- we have way to many spiders and bugs to pull weeds without gloves!
- Soapy water- if I find a “bad” bug or eggs I place them in soapy water to kill them.
- Garden twine or ties- I use this to help stake up the tomatoes and beans.
- Scissors- sometimes it is too hard to pull a weed as it may disrupt the root of a vegetable plant. Scissors are a great tool to use int he garden!
- Hand shovel- I also have a little hand rake for larger areas.
So this week we harvested our first yellow squash! We have another on the vine and it looks like a zucchini on the way too! We are still harvesting green beans and snap peas. The blackberries are just starting to ripen too. I expect to have out first cucumber by the end of the week!
The battle of the squash bugs is on! I have killed about 6 adults so far and found three leaves with the little brown eggs. I look under the leaves of the yellow and zucchini squash every couple of days. If I find a leaf with eggs, I snip the leaf off and place it in soapy water to kill the eggs. Look for the adults at the base of the squash plants.
So how is your garden growing? I would love to hear what you are harvesting!
