Facebook and other social media sites have been a great outlet for many of us. I know I am able to keep in contact with many of my friends and family via facebook. Just yesterday I found one of my elementary school friends that I had lost contact with. It’s pretty neat to find “lost” friends!
Facebook can also be a pretty scary place. One of my brothers is dealing with a facebook situation right now that involves his very young daughter. My brother’s ex made a facebook account for their four year old. Yes, you read that right- four. years. old! It is completely ridiculous! Needless to say, my brother was very upset to receive a friend request from his four year old. Thankfully, we were able to get the page shutdown by reporting the account to facebook.
Although facebook is great on many levels, it can be very dangerous. Be careful of the photos you upload of your children. You never know who will have access to viewing those photos.
I am facebook friends with several teenagers that are family members. They are great kids and most of the time only post reasonable things. However, I have seen their “friends” post questionable sayings and pictures. Not to mention the down right mean comments. I think people are too comfortable posting online and say things that they would never say in person.
I have very mixed feelings about facebook and it’s use for the younger crowd. I am glad that my boys are still young and I won’t have to deal with this issue for a very long time. But for those of you that have tweens and teens, what age do you let your children have a facebook account?
