There is no doubt about it, prescription medication is expensive. Our family has been lucky so far in that we only have one family member on a prescription medication. Our medical insurance just changed and we will now have a higher deductible for prescriptions. Hopefully we all stay healthy and we won’t have to use the insurance very often!
I know that many people are not so lucky though. For some of you, filling your prescription just got harder. Walgreens recently unsuccessfully negotiated a new contract with Express Scripts. This means that patients covered by an Express Scripts plan now find themselves having to change their pharmacists. Unfortunately, the change in pharmacies doesn’t equate a lower price either. You can read more about the dispute in the Walgreens and Express Scripts press release.
Affected clients included Tricare, the health and prescription drug program for the US military. Only patients with certain prescription insurance plans managed by Express Scripts are impacted. It is best to check with your local Walgreens pharmacist to find out for sure if you’re impacted. Patients also can check the back of their prescription insurance card – if it has Express Scripts’ name there, then they may be affected. If it doesn’t say Express Scripts, then they are not affected.
So, in order to better serve their customers, Walgreens is offering their Prescription Savings Club at Walgreens at the discounted price:
For the month of January (Jan. 1-31), Walgreens is offering a promotion on one-year memberships, making them only $5 for individuals or $10 for family memberships. This is a savings of $15 to $25 since normal annual membership is $20 per individual or $35 for a family.
Other benefits include:
• Savings on more than 8,000 brand-name and all generic medications
• Discounts on flu shots, pet prescriptions, nebulizers and diabetic supplies
• Bonuses when you purchase Walgreens brand products and photofinishing services
Even if you are not impacted by the Walgreens and Express Scripts dispute, the Prescription Savings Club at Walgreens is a good deal for those of you that don’t have prescription insurance coverage.
