A friend sent me a link to the article on Yahoo! Finance- Bad Couponing: 9 Tips to Avoid It. While I agree with some of the statements in the article, there is misinformation in this column.
The Good Points:
It is illegal to photocopy coupons, steal newspapers and make your own coupons. Many people new to couponing don’t realize that is illegal to make photocopies of coupons. Stealing and committing fraud by making your own coupons should be a no-brainer though!
The article also states that cutting off expiration dates from coupons is dishonest. I completely agree with that and hope that none of you try to redeem expired coupons unless your store specifically says they accept expired coupons. The reason being is stores may not get reimbursed for expired coupons.
The Points I Disagree With:
The same goes for those of you who hit the back button to force a limited Coupon.com coupon to print twice. When you take more than your fair share of a limited coupon, you’re denying the next shopper their fair share.
Let me just say that someone didn’t so their research here! You are allowed to print coupons twice, that is why it works. After the second coupon prints, the majority of the time it will say your coupon print limit has been reached. There is nothing wrong with printing two coupons and I would say that two is not taking “more than your fair share”.
As far as multiple transactions, that is up to your store. I often ask at CVS or Rite Aid if I can do multiple transactions and they are completely fine with it. I think the article is referring to multiple transactions at stores that limit 20 coupons per day like Harris Teeter. However, since the article didn’t clearly state that, I wanted to make sure you knew that multiple transactions are fine at most stores!
Grey Points:
“Buying coupons” is always a grey area. I admit that I use a clipping service on occasion. For me it’s about time- I don’t have time to clip my own so on occasion I order the coupons preclipped. You will find information on both sides of this argument.
Dumpster diving for coupons may be illegal in some areas but not all. I have written about this previously- in Central Virginia it is illegal to rummage through recycle bins for coupons. That being said, the first sentence in the article gave me a good laugh “If you photocopy a coupon or snatch one from a recycling bin, you’re risking arrest.” Although taking a coupon from a recycle bin might be illegal in some areas, I don’t agree that it is just as bad as photocopying a coupon. Before you hit the recycle bins, check with the laws in your area or check with the recycle bin owner.

I totally agree with everything you said. I always hit the back button on coupons.com coupons bc they will only let you print it twice & no more from that IP address. I DO think it’s crazy when ppl have multiple computers just to print out multiples of the same coupon but it’s not illegal. And most of the people who do major couponing have large families (meaning 1 kid or more) and they deserve to save every penny they can. So it’s not anyone getting more than their fair share. Everyone should always be planning for their future and a stockpile of nonperishables is a great thing to get on board with!

Yes planning for the future is so important. Having a stockpile of non-perishables is comforting in these uncertain times. If company’s did not want you to print the coupons twice per IP address, they could certainly prevent that! I imagine it would be easy since they can prevent you from printing more than 2 easily. I love clipping coupons & passing them on to friends & family——and strangers that might want or need them! I’ve passed a few out to strangers this week at Wal-Mart! My neighbor gives me her coupons so it’s perfect to clip & share! I’ve even asked a Panera Bread employee (0nce) in the past for permission for their coupons. She gave me all of their recycled papers to thumb through & take all the coupons out. I clipped & mailed them to Coups for Troops (military can use them up to six months past expiration dates). Although, I spend time clipping——–the joy of sharing is perfect for me! As for you paying someone to clip your coupons—–get Mr. B & Capt. M some blunt scissors! Ha! One of Sophia’s favorite items in her Christmas stocking was a pair of blunt scissors. She cuts something daily! The only mishap (so far) was cutting open one of her baby dolls as she cut the tag off! But I do recall that she cut a “spinbrush” toothbrush coupon in half one day in the truck (no scissors)—-so I guess it’s safe to let the boys wait on helping.
