When we go on vacation we always try to rent a place with a full kitchen or kitchenette. Several years ago we ended up buying a timeshare. Although, I don’t think this is the best option, it is paid for now. We trade out our timeshare which is in Hawaii and use the points to stay other places.
Even if you don’t have access to a timeshare, I do suggest trying to rent a place with at least a refrigerator. We save a ton of money on vacation by making our own breakfast, snack and lunch. If we are staying for only a few days, we eat dinner out using restaurant coupons. On longer trips, I plan to make dinners too.
If you do have the option of a kitchen, here are some things you should pack:
- Food storage containers, plastic wrap or baggies. Sometimes we have leftovers or need to pack snacks for day trips.
- Seasonings for cooking.
- Beverages. Bringing your own drinks will save you a ton of money. We pack coffee, bottled water, sodas and juice.
- Extra dishwasher detergent. If you are staying for an extended time, you may need to bring extra detergent.
- Extra trash bags. Bags are great to have for dirty laundry, wet bathing suits and towels or unanticipated messes.
- Ice packs and a small ice chest. We packed our lunch if we are planning on being gone for the day.
Planning your meals and snacks can really save you a lot of money on vacation. Eating out for every meal is a large expense. We found that we are able to do more activities by planning some meals ourselves. Even if you do eat out, packing your own snacks and beverages for the day is a good way to cut costs.
