Italian food is a favorite for both hubby and I. A friend of mine shared her Italian grandmother’s spaghetti sauce recipe with me many years ago. I love this sauce and have used it for spaghetti, pizza, eggplant parmesan and anything that calls for a red sauce! This makes a large batch which is perfect for freezing.
- 16 oz. Italian Sausage
- 2 Tablespoons Olive Oil
- 1 Onion, diced
- 3 Cloves Garlic, pressed or chopped
- (3) Cans Diced Tomatoes (14.5 oz.)
- (2) Cans Tomato Sauce (14.5 oz.)
- 1 Can Tomato Paste (6 oz.)
- 1 Tablespoon Basil
- 1 Tablespoon Italian Seasoning
- 1 Teaspoon Parsley
- ¼ Cup Parmesan Cheese
- 1 Teaspoon Sugar
- Dash of Pepper
- Heat oil over medium heat in a large stockpot.
- Add Italian sausage and cook until no longer pink. Set sausage aside.
- Add onion, parsley, basil and Italian seasoning to pan that sausage was cooked in. Cook until onions are clear.
- Add garlic and cook for an additional 2 minutes.
- Add tomatoes, sauce, paste and pepper. Heat until boiling. Simmer for about 20 minutes.
- Add Parmesan cheese, sugar and pepper. Simmer for an additional 15 minutes. I add a lid that is slightly vented to prevent sauce popping all over my stove.
- Serve and enjoy!
Tips
- This recipe can easily be made without meat or with turkey sausage.
- The great thing about marinara sauce is that it can be cooked for a short or long period. I have made this same recipe by using the slow cooker.
- If you have leftovers, allow the sauce to cool completely. Place in freezer bags and freeze flat.
