I (Litsa) love to drive into Memphis here in West Tennessee to visit Whole Foods for their fresh produce and aisles and aisles of healthy products! But when I arrive, I’m often overwhelmed with what to buy that we’ll eat once I’m there. Pasta looks like pasta. Salsa dips look like salsa dips….etc. Thus, I end up leaving with fresh produce, a few containers of decadent, deli dishes for the week, and homemade cookies! Therefore, I often wonder whether to revisit Whole Foods when I have a 2 hour drive to get there!
With a couple of hours of computer browse time and fresh produce, I could make my own delicatessen delights! Or maybe I could use that time to read labels in our local Kroger’s organic department or just visit the health food store in town that gets better with time!! I believe that as I continue to revisit what I’m buying for our family to eat that I’ll do a little of all of the above—–and visit Prevention’s Eat Clean website: prevention.com/cleanfood2013. This website will allow us to browse by meal or food category and one can even sort by important-to-you criteria, such as certified organic, gluten-free, high-fiber, suitable for people with diabetes, and more!!!
The criteria that foods must pass to get on Prevention’s Eat Clean List include:
- No GMO ingredients
- No more than 10g of added sugar
- Less than 200 mg of sodium per serving (400 mg for meals)
- BPA-free (for cans)
- Sustainable (for fish), according to Monterrey Bay Aquarium’s seafood criteria
- Utterly delicious!
Thus, I think I’ll visit this list on my smartphone while shopping locally at Kroger, the local health food store, and at Whole Foods in Memphis——and I may even do a little homework and skim categories on the website prior to shopping for the items I’d like for our family to try!
