Preparing for Sandy

Like millions of other people, we are preparing for the arrival of the mega storm Sandy. I awoke Sunday morning to the winds already starting and we are more than a day away of the worst of the storm. We have a well for water and all electric appliances. Therefore we are taking time to prepare since there is a high chance the power will go out.

  • Water: We have a 50 gallon rain barrel that is full of water. We will use that water to flush toilets if the power goes out. I also purchased 5 gallons of water for cooking and drinking. If you don’t want to purchase water, fill containers you have at home now.
  • Food: We have shelf stable food that we can eat. I also had hubby fill up the propane tank for our grill since we have an electric stove. If need be, we can use the grill to cook. I also filled some empty containers with water and placed them in the freezer. Blocks of ice will help hold the food if the power is out.
  • Supplies: I bought extra batteries for the flashlights and have candles and matches on standby. We also have a disaster preparedness kit just in case.
  • Yard Work: Hubby has been trying to prepare the outside of our home for heavy rain and wind. He did clear the gutters of leaved but the wind has already blown the leaves back in! We will have to clear them again when the rain starts. We also live on a hill and water runs towards the house when it rains heavily. Hubby started digging a trench to hopefully guide the water away from the house. Our crawlspace basement sometimes floods during heavy rain so this is a precaution. We also cleaned up any toys or items that may fly around.

If you are on the east coast or in northern states, I hope you have taken some time to prepare for Sandy. Stay safe everyone!
