Preparing Apples for Canning

supplies for canning apples

It’s apple season! I told you all how my family went to the local apple orchard recently. We picked a whole bushel of apples! I prepared the apples for canning and made applesauce, apple pie filling and apple jelly.

Before you get started with preparing the apples, gather all of your supplies. You need:

  • Cutting boards
  • Lemons
  • a large bowl of water
  • a knife
  • an apple, peeler corer (not completely necessary but helpful!)
  • Towels

I roll the lemons and place the juice of one lemon in a large bowl with water. This will prevent the apples from oxidizing and turning brown. Place the apple slices in the lemon water as you cut them. Once I got two large bowls of sliced apples, I made applesauce.

Applesauce is very simple to make. Just cook down the apples until they are soft and add a bit of sugar. I also like to add a little cinnamon and a dash of nutmeg. Everyone makes applesauce different- sweeten it to your liking. I used about a cup of brown sugar.

For the apple jelly, I used the apple cores and peelings from the apples I used for the applesauce. I used this apple core and peeling jelly recipe for reference. This is a great way to make sure you use every last bit of the apple! My boys love peanut butter and jelly sandwiches so I try to make all homemade jelly or jam.

Lastly, I made apple pie filling and canned it. This is perfect for quick desserts! If anyone is interested, I can share the recipe for apple pie filling in another post- just let me know!

Do you can apples or anything else?

  4. I like to use unsweetened applesauce for baking. Was wondering if I don’t add sugar to this will it be like the unsweetened found in stores and work just as well for baking?

    • Hi Cayla,
You do not have to add sugar to make applesauce! I use my canned applesauce for oil substitution all of the time in baking. I do add a small amount of sugar to my applesauce but it is not necessary! Good luck!
