Oral health is a subject near and dear to my heart since I am a Registered Dental Hygienist. February is National Children’s Dental Health Month. The American Dental Association (ADA) sponsors National Children’s Dental Health Month to raise awareness about the importance of dental health. Developing good habits at an early age and scheduling regular dental visits helps children get a good start on a lifetime of healthy teeth and gums. This year’s theme is “Join the Super Smile Team.” There are several free resources including downloadable posters and activity sheets available through the ADA.
I have previously discussed the following dental topics here on the blog:
How to Care for Your Child’s Teeth
When to Change Your Toothbrush
How to Get Rid of the Pacifier
Buddy’s Tips tips for strong teeth and a healthy smile!
- Twice a day: Brush your teeth when you wake up and before you go to bed.
- Take your time: Brush your teeth for 2 minutes and be sure to include your tongue!
- Be kind to your gums: Brush with a soft bristle toothbrush.
- Get the hard to reach places: Floss your teeth at bedtime.
- See your Dentist twice a year!

I agree with the comments above about starting early. If you start when they’re babies with just a wet washcloth it helps to get them used having their gums/teeth brushed.
I subscribe through Feedly. Thanks!
I think a fluoride rinse for the kids is great. It helps for the places that they dont get to brush too well. thanks
Carol I would check with your dentist about this. There is an opinion that some people are overdoing this fluoride thing.

My son is five and has autism. I have not taken him to a dentist yet because I know how he will react. He screams like I am hurting him when I brush his teeth at night.I just keep hoping he will not get a cavity til he is grown and will better understand going to the dentist. He loves Dinosaur train…a lot.
