Read Across America Day is scheduled for the entire family on March 2nd! Put on your silly Dr. Seuss hat and celebrate reading as you commemorate Dr. Seuss’s birthday! Pick up a stack of his books and/or just one! Read aloud and let your children see reading in action—–fun, lively, & initiated by you! Additionally, visit nea.org to find events in your area!
Here are a few Dr. Seuss books that are available at Amazon for you and your family to enjoy year round! My Many Colored Days is an excellent book found in board book versions for the youngest of readers! It uses colors to illustrate the different emotions of our day(s)! “Some days are yellow….Some are blue….on bright red days how good it feels to be…..then come my black days. Mad. And Loud. I howl….” It’s a book you don’t want to miss sharing with your children. Helping them through their emotions as you struggle and/or engage with your own will help you communicate more throughout the years! This is also a great book to help beginning readers create a feelings journal through the use of color and images!
Oh! The Places You Will Go is a book that I received in my first years of teaching from a valued administrator that knew I was going places as a young adult and as a beginning teacher! As I’m continuing to grow and learn, I still reflect back on this book! How wonderful would it be to share this book now with our young children as we document and watch how they’ll grow———–and oh! the places they’ll go! Those adventures and journeys are an exciting anticipated event that we can begin to capture with the words of this book!
And here’s yet another book, Happy Birthday to You, by Dr. Seuss! I ordered this one this weekend for my daughter from Amazon. At 3.5 years old, she’s mesmerized by birthdays and celebrating them! How magical! Shouldn’t we too celebrate the passing of a year and the gift of having another year ahead of us!?! She watches Dr. Seuss’s Adventures on television every morning prior to preschool and the words that she’s already memorized from us reading Hop on Pop by Dr. Seuss, initiated mommy to splurge or this wonderful work of literature that will become part of our days together at home! And the excitement of reading won’t stop here with toddler-hood but these favorite Seuss books we share together will develop her love of literature! The words on page will dance in her brain and develop a lifelong reader!
What will you read with your children on Dr. Seuss day?
