I was out running errands getting ready for our trip to the beach. Since it is a long car ride, I knew that I would need to get items to entertain Capt. M and Mr. B. As I was looking at the $5 DVD’s at Walmart, it hit me.
The library!
My local library has FREE DVD and Blu-ray rentals. You can check out up to 10 movies for a two week period for absolutely free. Not only did I rent a few movies for the kids but I also checked a couple for hubby and I. Since our boys are young, we can’t stay out late. Bringing movies along for us to watch after the kids go to sleep is a good way to keep us entertained on vacation too!
I also checked out books which all of us love.
So the next time you are planning a trip and need entertainment, stop in to your library and see what they have to offer! Just remember to keep track of the items you check out. Believe me, we have had our fair share of overdue library books!
Check out more ideas on how to keep your kids entertained in the car.

you’re very lucky – state budget cuts have forced our library to charge for non-educational dvds. you get them for $1 for a week, but the fine is $2/day after that.
Hi Sheri,
We are lucky to have a wonderful library! We can also check out video games at no charge. $1 a week for a DVD rental is not bad though- as long as you aren’t late! Have a good weekend!
I serve on my tiny town’s Library Board. Our Library, and I would venture to guess libraries nation wide, offer fine forgiveness in lieu of donation. I weeded out quite a few DVDs that my family only watches occasionally. Our library still does free dvd check-out, so even if my family asks “hey, what ever happened to Winnie the Pooh?” I can still borrow it from the library myself! Plus, I’ve accumulated about a $15 credit at my library for all my donations. My library also has board games. And they offer jigsaw puzzles for honor-system checkout (since it’d be impossible to account for all the pieces).
