Avocado

Over the last couple of weeks I have witnessed a couple of people struggling to cut and peel an avocado. I thought it would be helpful to give a little tutorial! Growing up in California we ate a lot of avocados. They are one of my favorite foods! They are fairly easy to cut and peel once you know the technique.

Cut Avocado

First take a knife and run it all the way around the avocado splitting the avocado in half. Basically cut into the avocado until you reach the seed and then gently run the knife along the seed until you have two halves. Twist the two halves and one side will have a pit while the other is pit free.

Run Knife Around Edge

To get the avocado pit out, gently push on the pit with the edge of your knife. It should pop right out. If you want avocado slices, makes cuts into the avocado to make the slices but do not cut through the skin. Then run the knife around the outside edge- between the fruit and the skin.

Sliced Avocado

Lift the slices out of the skin with the knife or gently squish the skin until the fruit releases forward. If you are mashing the avocado for guacamole, just simply scoop the avocado out of the skin with a spoon or by squishing the skin.

Note: This technique works well when the avocado is ripe. A ripe avocado is slightly soft to touch. If it is hard with no give when you squeeze it, the avocado is not ripe and you will have a hard time cutting and peeling it. Ripen an avocado quicker by placing it in a brown paper bag on the counter.
