How many times have you heard that breakfast is the most important meal of the day? I have been told this since I was a young girl but I never really believed it until this last year. Mornings are always a rush in our household. I have to be out the door at 7:27 am- yes I have it down to the minute! In the past that meant that I rarely ate breakfast. Plus, if I did eat breakfast, it was the wrong type. Simple carbohydrates in the morning make me feel terrible. I have learned that I can’t eat popular breakfast items like pancakes, waffles, french toast, cinnamon rolls, etc. If I do eat those items, I feel terrible about an hour later.

Last year when I started the 24 day challenge, breakfast was a big component of the program. I tried eggs one day and tried homemade oatmeal the next. For me, the oatmeal made me feel better. I can easily make it to my 10 am snack break without feeling jittery with low blood sugar – a common occurrence if in my pre-breakfast life. I was asked recently what I eat for breakfast so I wanted to share what works for me.

Renae’s Oatmeal

1/4 Cup Rolled Oats
1/2 Cup Vanilla Almond Milk
Handful of Dried Cranberries
Almond Slices

In a microwave safe bowl add the oats and almond milk. Microwave for 1 minute and 30 seconds. Remove from microwave and add cranberries and almond slices. Let sit for a couple of minutes to thicken.

I have told you all before how much I love coffee and flavored coffee-creamer. A few months ago, I started to notice that I didn’t feel good- even after my oatmeal. The jitters were returning. I decided to cut the coffee and see if I felt better. As you can probably guess, I did feel better! So no coffee for me in the mornings- even though I love it. I do occasionally drink coffee; usually on the afternoon that I do my grocery shopping!

The moral of the story, breakfast is important! Sometimes we have to make sacrifices – like giving up my coffee – in order to benefit our bodies. These sacrifices are worth it when you start feeling healthy. Breakfast helps regulate your blood sugar from the sleeping fast that occurred and it increases your metabolism. Listen to your body and get in the right mind set. If you are not feeling good, try a different type of food for breakfast. Try something that is protein rich yet lean.  It also helps to stick to the same breakfast each morning. I don’t have to think about it and I know it works for me.

Are you in the routine of eating breakfast everyday? What breakfast food works best for you?
