Yesterday, my daughter and I (Litsa) ventured to Memphis, Tennessee—-a two our drive into the CITY from our home. One of our planned stops was Whole Foods Market! As the day wore on and we wore down, I almost skipped the trip into the newly revamped market. I caught myself talking myself out of going but my little girl’s eyes were still awake and cookies and tea sounded like a great afternoon treat. The parking lot was my second deterrent. A winter day at seventy degrees had everyone in the city venturing to Whole Foods!?! However, we found a parking spot a block away and hiked back to the market.
My heart skipped a beat when I saw greens upon greens upon greens stacked. I was just GREEN with envy! What a beautiful sight!?! I thought I needed a picture of them (but I didn’t reach for my iphone camera—the store was buzzing with shoppers and my child was hopping from fruit to veggie to……)! There were reds, oranges, yellows…….and I was mesmerized!
We zoomed through the store adding red quiona to our shopping cart, roasted pumpkin seeds, RUNA teas, and…..a variety of cookies, vegetables, and fruits. “Mommy, these are so sweet!”
“Look Mommy, they have Daddy’s spice here but it’s all gone!?!”
“Mommy, these are so good! Mmmmm…..” as she consumed the roasted pumpkin seeds.
“Mommy, this is that plant we have at home!” noticing the Aloe Vera plant as we reluctantly headed back to the truck.
“Mommy, you can eat the little pieces but not the big pieces (of lemon iced shortbread cookies). I want to eat my grapes right now. They are so, so sweet! Look how many I ate.”
Both of us were consumed in the sensory experience we had at Whole Foods—the sights, the smells, the sounds, the tastes, the feel……
As we checked out, I noticed two magazines next to the cash register! Eating Well and Natural Health—both which had arrived in my mailbox last Thursday! As my little one fell asleep on the way home, I reflected more and more on our food choices over the course of the year—the month…the season….the day! Eating well and choosing foods that naturally feed us is imperative to our health. It’s a mandatory appointment in our calendar because the choices I make ARE the choices my child makes when choosing foods to feed herself.
Whole foods that grow in our world are on our grocery list today!
What’s on your grocery list?
