One thing to take into consideration while grocery shopping is to shop in season. What I mean is to buy products that typically go with the season we are in. This is particularly true for produce but does apply to other items. Shopping in season is also a good way to reduce your grocery bill without using coupons.

For produce, buying in season will mean cheaper prices and better quality. In the summer months you will find cucumbers, tomatoes, summer squash, bell peppers and many tree fruits at their lowest price. In colder months you will want to plan your menu around things like broccoli, potatoes, winter squash, apples and asparagus.

For other products consider what type of food is most popular during the season. For example, in the summer many people use an outdoor grill. So foods that are great for picnics and condiments will be at their lowest price. During the Fall and WInter, you will want to stock up on soups, broths, gravy and more hearty foods.

For non-perishable goods it is best to stock up on items when it is in season. During the winter months I will stock up on canned goods. During the summer I pick up extra condiments.

Shopping in season and planning your menu accordingly will save you a lot on your grocery bill. Even if you don’t use a lot of coupons, shopping in season will reduce your bill.
