One thing that is prominent for many families across the country is the inclusion of family traditions during the Holiday season. Family traditions may be silly or serious but they always create lasting memories. Traditions also change as our life changes. Thanksgiving with my mom and step-dad consists of a traditional camping weekend with friends and family. Everyone packs up their RV’s and heads to the lake. Sometimes close to 100 people come together for a traditional Thanksgiving day feast camping style. Hubby and I haven’t participated in this tradition for years now since we now live on the other side of the country. Instead we have started our own traditions!
For the last few years we have headed north for Thanksgiving. It’s a whirlwind long weekend with tons of food, games and family time. The day after Thanksgiving is now dubbed Christmas with the In-laws. Since we don’t head north for Christmas, we celebrate both holidays in one weekend! Food is generally the center of our celebrations. Lot’s of snacks and appetizers before the big main meal. There is just something about being in the kitchen cooking and washing dishes that brings us all together! From young to old, we all help out with the meal in some way.
A quick and easy appetizer is a Hickory Farms basket. We always have a summer sausage log and cheese as part of our appetizer roundup. Hickory Farms gifts have been a classic holiday tradition that brings family and friends together for more than 60 years! Hickory Farms gifts can be purchased online at HickoryFarms.com or at 600 Holiday Market stores and kiosks across North America, as well as in select retailers.

We wait for my parents to come over every Christmas morning so they can see the kids open their gifts
One particular tradition that is important to my family at Christmas is waking up with my boys to see them open up their presents, which is followed by taking them to my grandmother’s house to see other family members and eat a Christmas meal with them.
I make my grandmother’s recipe for Sweet Potato Pie every year–enough so that everyone takes one home. To keep the tradition going, it is almost time to pass the recipe to the next generation.

Our holiday tradition is to get the whole family together – 4 generations strong! It will be five generations before we know it! From my 88 year old grandparents to my cousin’s three year old daughter, we love each other madly. We enjoy each other’s company so much.

We take a quick family photo every year, and then let the kids make an ornament with it. It’s so much fun to see how creative they get, and fun to look back at all their old ones!
