I have been traveling a lot this summer. In fact, I have had a packed suitcase on my bedroom floor since June. Home for a few days and then off again. I have a few tips for you to make going through airport security a breeze.

  • Have your photo ID and ticket out and ready.
  • Wear shoes that are easy to slip off and on.
  • Don’t wear a lot of jewelry or a belt.
  • Laptops must be taken out of your bag so have it in an easy spot to access.
  • All liquids and gels must fit into a quart size, clear, zipper bag. Each container is limited to 3 oz. or less. I place my bag full of liquids/ gels in the same bag as my laptop for easy access.
  • Do not place bottles of water or any other beverage in your bags.
  • If you are wearing a jacket or sweater, it must be taken off before going through the metal detector or scanner.
  • Personally, I don’t want to go through the scanner so I look for the line that only has a metal detector. (I depart out of a small airport and they only have one scanner machine.)

  1. I live in Utah and use the Salt Lake International airport. We actually have the ‘split line’ so the security splits to three lines — families and those require special assistance (wheelchairs, elderly); frequent travelers (my husband and other men-walking-fast-in-dockers); regular travelers.
The split line makes a HUGE difference to ‘regular’ travelers. The ‘imaging’ machine is located closer to the frequent travelers. My husband does use because a)it is faster and b)he is SO over it. Our congressman in Jason Chafetz who is known for having reservations with the imaging machine. My husband has been in line with him before, but he skips the imaging machine.
Also, when I traveled a lone with my 3 kids, I was so pleased that the TSA gently and efficiently helped my 7 year old walk to the ‘regular’ line when he unknowingly got in the imaging line. Bless their hearts!

    • Sounds like you have a great airport Debi! I just cautious about the imaging machine because it is radiation. I would like to see long term studies before going through it regularly. Glad the TSA helped your kiddo!
