For Holiday meals the adults in our family enjoy sitting and chatting for a leisurely meal. Unfortunately the young kids are usually ready to be excused from the table before I am even done eating! I did a trial run of a kids table yesterday. I saw the Turkey Caddy idea on the Family Fun website and thought it was perfect!
Instead of placemats I used a large piece of paper. You could also use butcher paper as a tablecloth. We always use cloth napkins– not only are they eco-friendly but they are great at cleaning up the inevitable spill! Instead of giving the kids real knives, we give them little butter knives or little spreader knives. This way the kids still feel privileged to have a knife but we don’t have to worry about them getting hurt. And what Thanksgiving dinner wouldn’t be complete without a headband? Yes, my boys have been wearing them all weekend!
For our Turkey Caddy I used crayons instead of markers. They stick very easily into the styrofoam ball that I bought at a yard sale for $0.25. I place the turkey caddy on top of my homemade plate stand and placed sticky foam shapes on the bottom plate. After the kids are done eating they can color their “placemats” and add sticky shapes! Hopefully this will keep them entertained for a bit.
Do you have any ideas for a kid’s Thanksgiving table?
