Sangria

Today we are headed to my kitchen for Thirsty Thursday wine tasting! The goal of Thirsty Thursday is to find good and cheap wines for under $10.

Since summer is just around the corner, I thought it would be fun to make Sangria. If you are not big on wine but like sweet and fruity drinks, I think you will like Sangria even though it is made with wine.

Traditionally, Sangria is made with red wine. There are so many variations though. Basically you need wine, fruit, sugar, a little water, fruit juice, ice and ginger ale. Some Sangria’s also call for other alcohol like sweet vermouth, grenadine or brandy. My favorite is the Olive Garden Sangria with vermouth and grenadine. This week I went for the light and frugal version and did not add additional alcohol.

White Wine Sangria

1 Bottle White Wine (Chardonnay)
12 oz. Lemonade
Cut Strawberries
Sliced Orange
1/3 Cup Sugar
1/3 Cup Water
12 oz. Ginger Ale
Crushed Ice

In a large container combine wine, lemonade and fruit. In a separate container mix the sugar and water until the sugar dissolves. Add the sugar water to the wine mixture. Refrigerate at least two hours or overnight. Just before serving add ginger ale.

Serve Sangria over crushed ice and include fruit on the glass.

As always, make sure you drink responsibly. With this recipe I also suggest you place the Sangria in a container that your kids don’t normally use. It could easily be mistaken for punch!
