Since I told you about my chickens earlier this week, I thought it would be appropriate to tell you how to boil a perfect egg! Everyone in my family has a different way they like their eggs- Capt. M likes egg whites only, Mr. B loves omelets, Hubby likes over easy and I like hard boiled or poached.
Hard Boiled Eggs
Place eggs in a large pot. Cover the eggs with cold water. Place on the stove over high heat. Allow the water to come to a rapid boil. Once the water has reached a full boil, cover the pot with a lid and turn off the burner. Let sit for 12 minutes.
After 12 minutes is up, place eggs in a cold water and ice bath. Cooling the eggs quickly helps the eggs peel easier. Once cool, place in the refrigerator.
Tips
- I found that 12 minutes is the perfect time for large eggs. Smaller eggs may not need as long otherwise the yolk will turn a greenish color.
- Eggs that are a couple of weeks old are better for hard boiling. The shell is hard to peel on fresh eggs. We usually boil eggs that are a week or two old.
- Hard boiled eggs are great to take as a snack!

Renae,
I knew we were meant to be friends! I’m a hard-boiled egg person AND I love poached eggs. So many don’t but I grew up eating them and they’re my favorite!
I also use a very similar method to make hard boiled eggs. I take mine off the burner since I have an electric stove and it stays hot for too long. Also, I use 8 minutes because by time I take them off the heat, then get them into the ice water it’s another few minutes.
MMMM! Delish!
