Education on the Go

As a working mom every minute with my kids count. On work days I have very little time to sit down with them and give educational lessons. I have found that there are plenty of lessons that can be taught on the go!

Currently we have a 15 minute drive to the babysitter. I use that time to talk about what we can see from the car windows. It is really amazing how many educational topics come up from observing nature. Just recently Capt. M wondered why the sun followed us no matter how many times the car turned. This conversation turned into a lesson about planets and the earth’s orbit. The lessons are natural- Capt. M doesn’t even realize that I am teaching.

Other fun car activities are singing educational songs like the Days of the Week or the Alphabet, playing I Spy or identifying vehicles. Usually I just go with the flow and let Capt. M or Mr. B lead the way on where the conversation goes.

Another time that we try to implement educational activities is at the dinner table. We always sit down as a family. It’s not easy since my kids can’t sit still for more than five minutes! However, dinner is a perfect opportunity to talk about food groups, colors and even counting. My boys are both obsessed with counting everything right now!

write a mat

For Christmas, the boys received Melissa & Doug Write-A-Mat placemats. This is a great way to bring education to mealtime. There are several different Write-A-Mats to choose from and they retail for around $2.99. When the boys are finished eating, they can write on the placemats. Often times they are done with their meals way before mommy and daddy!

I love Melissa & Doug products! Currently you can score a $35 Brighter Beginnings Toys voucher for just $15 from Eversave. This online toy store caries a lot of Melissa & Doug items as well as other educational toys. This offer ends January 27, 2011. The great thing is that the voucher doesn’t expire until December 31, 2011- think Christmas! If you are new to Eversave, you will also get a $2 instant coupon making this deal only $13!

What are your tips for teaching on the go?
