Overdue Library Books

library books shelves

I have a confession, I found two library books in Captain M.’s room that are three months overdue. Oh my word! I couldn’t believe it when I saw them- didn’t I return those? Nope, I guess mommy brain took over and I completely forgot about them. We were organizing the boys rooms when I came across two books with library stickers on them. Ugh!

So apparently, we need a new system! How do you keep track of library books? Do you write it on a calender? I think we won’t be checking any books out for a long while- at least until I can get myself organized!

I am nervous to find out what my fines will be. I do know that our library will accept book donations as a way to pay off debt- I think we will be clearing out a large portion of our bookshelf!

If you have a system in place for library books, I would love to hear about it!

My girls are grown now, but I still have an absent-minded husband! When the girls were small, we had a “library basket” where library books were kept — immediately after reading, the book had to go back in the basket. I made it easier by checking out the same number of books at a time — for us, it was five — so that you know if all the books are there.

The absent-minded husband is a little more difficult, but I make sure he only checks out two at a time, so I know how many books are out.

  2. I always enter the due date in my Outlook calendar with a reminder set for three days before the due date. By doing that, it gives me a chance to go online and renew all the books before the due date. If there are books which can’t be renewed online, I still have a few days to find time to run through and return them before the due date.

    • Hi Mary,
I need to get int eh habit of using a calender! I think it would help me in a lot of areas! Thanks!

  3. We have baskets that the library books go into when we get home that stay in the living room. They are not allowed to go into their rooms unless they “check them out” from me.

I also have signed up for online library notices through our library as well and they send me e-mails when the due date is coming up and if I have overdue books.

    • Missy,
I love the idea of the kids “checking” the books out from you! The books I found got mixed in with our other books- we have a ton. Implementing the basket and check system will be our new routine.
      Thanks!

  4. When we borrow books we keep them in our “Library bags” and hang them on the railing in the living room. The kids return them to the bag when they are done. We use the bags the boys got when they attended a summer reading program a few years ago.

    • Yes, we will need to keep the library books in a designated bag or basket. My boys love reading, but we definitely need a system for library books!

  5. If you have on-line access, it is easy to see exactly what is checked out. Also, it helps to have a specific place where all library books are kept. In addition, we have a rule that library books are no allowed in the bedrooms. Hope this helps.
