My boys love balloons! Every since they were toddlers they have been drawn to these colorful, light as a feather balls. Latex balloons are really inexpensive and there are so many activities kids can do with them. Of course my kids love the helium filled balloons but we only get those on birthdays. For the rest of the year, they play activities with just air filled balloons. If your kids are bored this summer, grab a pack of balloons and try these balloon activities!
- Indoor Volleyball – Use a latex balloon to hit back and forth over a coach. Don’t let the balloon touch the floor or the other person scores a point. The first one to 10 wins!
- Hot Potato – If you have a large group of kids, you can play hot potato with the balloon. Turn up the music and when the music is off, the person with the balloon is out!
- Paper Mache – Make a bowl using a balloon as a mold! Blow up a balloon, dip yarn pieces or tissue paper pieces in white glue. Spread the yarn and tissue paper over the balloon. Let dry and then pop the balloon! Instead of using white glue, you can also use flour and water to make a paste! There are more instructions on this paper mache post.
- Water Balloons – Surprise your kids on a hot day with a bucket of water balloons! Play water balloon toss and see how long you can keep the balloons from popping.
- Balloon Rockets – Make a simple rocket with a little yarn, tape and a straw! A great way for kids to learn about the exchange of energy.
- Silly Balloon Face – Let your children draw silly faces on balloons with Sharpie markers! Use different colored markers for a bigger impact.
- Secret Balloon Item – Place a small item inside the balloon before filling it up. When the balloon is filled, the item inside can bounce around! You could also fill these up yourself and then let the kids guess on how you made this happen!
- Balloon Stomp – Tie a ribbon to a balloon and then tie the balloon to the child’s ankle. Mark off an area that the kids must stay in. The children chase each other around trying to stomp each other’s balloons. The goal of the game is to not let your balloon pop! This game is best played outside but could be done inside if you have a large open room.
- Pinata – Much the same as making paper mache, although this time you will fill up the end product! Here is a tutorial for mini pinatas!
- Booty Balloon Race – This one is a great outdoor activity on a hot day! Have the kids race to one side of the yard where water balloons are waiting. They must pop a water balloon by sitting on it! Once their balloon has popped, they need to race back to the other side of the yard to cross the finish line!
- Fill a Balloon without Blowing it up – Do a science experiment with baking soda and vinegar!
Do you have any activities that you do with balloons! Please share your tips!
